Cost of Living in Greenville: Managing Your Finances Faithfully

Raising a family in Greenville, SC, is a blessing. The city offers a unique blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities, all nestled in the beautiful Upstate region. However, as Greenville continues to grow, so does the cost of living. For Christian couples thinking of moving here, especially those raising children, navigating these financial challenges while remaining faithful to God’s Word can be daunting. But with a little planning and biblical wisdom, you can live in Greenville and manage your finances faithfully.

Understanding the Cost of Living in Greenville

The Economic Landscape of Greenville

Greenville has become a vibrant hub for businesses, arts, and culture, attracting people from all over the country. As a result, the cost of living has risen, particularly in areas like housing, utilities, and transportation. While it’s still more affordable than some major cities, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the local economy.

When my wife and I first moved to Greenville in 2019, and we were looking for a place to live, there were many factors influencing us. The primary challenge was finding a suitable home close to the church. Faith Free Presbyterian Church isn’t in the heart of downtown Greenville, but it was starting to get expensive in the area where the church is located.

Breaking Down Key Expenses

Housing Costs

Housing is likely your biggest expense, and it’s important to choose wisely. Greenville offers a range of housing options, from historic homes downtown to new developments in the suburbs. As you consider where to live, think about your long-term needs, including proximity to work, schools, and—of course—your church.

Try to consider the expenses related to your commute. I have seen people try to save money by purchasing a home far from our church. What ends up happening is they spend a lot of time—and money—traveling to and from church for services and other events. In addition, they lack connection with others who live closer.

Utilities and Transportation

Utility costs in Greenville are generally in line with the national average, but they can add up quickly, especially during the hot summer months when air conditioning is a must. Transportation is another consideration. If you’re coming from a city with decent public transport, that is not available in Greenville. Cars are essential.

Groceries and Dining

Groceries in Greenville are reasonably priced, though dining out can vary depending on where you go. If money is tight, fight the urge to eat out. Dining at restaurants is often a way of life for Americans, but it is an expensive practice, especially with a young family.  Planning your meals and cooking at home can save you a significant amount of money. It also provides an opportunity to practice hospitality by inviting others into your home for a meal.

My wife and I do not tend to eat out much, but we love hosting people in our home. It’s a time to share testimonies, be an encouragement to others, and enjoy good food—without the high cost of eating out. We’ve found that these simple gatherings strengthen our relationships and create lasting memories.

Biblical Principles for Financial Stewardship

Managing your finances faithfully starts with understanding God’s principles for stewardship. The Bible provides timeless wisdom on how to handle money, and applying these truths can bring peace and stability to your financial life.

Living Within Your Means

Proverbs 21:20 tells us, “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” This verse reminds us of the importance of living within our means and having the provisions necessary in all seasons of life. In today’s culture, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overspending, especially when it comes to housing or lifestyle choices.

For the first 15 years of our marriage, my wife and I did not own a home. Partly that was due to God’s providence. We spent two years ministering in Australia, returned to the UK to study, and then pastored a church in Canada for four years before relocating to Greenville, SC. These moves made it difficult to even think about buying a home. But the reality was that we could not have done so. We needed to save, and that’s what we did. We were committed to living below our means, so that when we finally moved to Greenville, we were in a position to buy a home.

Saving and Planning for the Future

The Bible encourages us to plan and save wisely. Proverbs 6:6-8 says, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.” This passage highlights the importance of preparing for the future, whether it’s building an emergency fund, saving for retirement, or planning for other future expenses.

Setting aside even a small amount each month can make a big difference over time. Learn to involve your kids in the process, teaching them the value of saving and the importance of being good stewards of God’s provision.

A stroll on a Saturday morning at Falls Park, followed by a picnic lunch, can be a great way to enjoy time together. It’s a simple, inexpensive way to enjoy God’s creation and spend quality time as a family.

Trusting in God’s Provision

As you navigate trying to determine the cost of living in Greenville, remember that managing your finances faithfully is not just about making ends meet—it’s about honoring God with your resources and trusting in His provision. Matthew 6:33 reminds us to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” When we prioritize God’s kingdom and manage our finances according to His principles, He will provide for our needs.
