Greenville, SC, the home of Faith Free Presbyterian Church, has a lot going for it, but one of its crown jewels has to be Falls Park on the Reedy. If you’ve ever strolled through downtown Greenville, you’ve probably found yourself wandering into this beautiful green space without even realizing it. Falls Park is more than just a pretty spot to take a picture—it’s a place rich in history, full of life, and brimming with opportunities for connection and ministry. Let me take you on a little tour of Falls Park and share why I believe it’s not just a great place to visit, but also why I evangelize there regularly.

From Industrial Hub to Urban Oasis
Falls Park wasn’t always the lush, picturesque park we know today. In fact, if you could step back in time to the early 1900s, you’d hardly recognize the place. The area around the Reedy River was a hub of industrial activity, with textile mills dominating the landscape. The falls themselves were hidden under a massive bridge, and the river was more of a dumping ground than a place of beauty.
The transformation began in the late 20th century when city leaders, including Mayor Knox White, envisioned something better for Greenville. They saw potential in the neglected riverfront and began the process of revitalization. The old Camperdown Bridge was removed, the area was cleaned up, and in 2004, Falls Park was officially opened to the public. The iconic Liberty Bridge, a stunning pedestrian suspension bridge, was constructed, offering unparalleled views of the falls and quickly becoming a symbol of Greenville’s rebirth. For those who remember the area from before its redevelopment, it is as if the city was been given a new heart—a place where people could gather, relax, and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation right in the middle of downtown.

Not only is Falls Park home to the aforementioned Liberty Bridge, it is surrounded by some of the most beautifully maintained gardens in the region. The park’s pathways wind through a variety of landscapes, from manicured flower beds to more natural, wooded areas. There are plenty of benches and open spaces where you can sit and enjoy the scenery, read a book, or have a quiet conversation. There’s even a small amphitheater. There are many places for quiet contemplation and prayer, but that’s not why I go to Fall’s Park—a point I will explain more in just a moment.

I’ve had conversations with people from all walks of life at the park—some who are churchgoers, some who are atheists, and others who are open and exploring. Engaging people at Falls Park allows Christians to share their faith in a way they might not be able to at church.

Falls Park’s flexible layout allows for a variety of evangelistic approaches. Whether you’re having one-on-one conversations or preaching in the open air, the park provides a versatile setting for different methods of outreach.
Very often when I am there, I will bring my portable speaker and mix things up between short gospel sermons and Christian music. While this is going on, other members of our outreach team will hand out gospel literature and seek to engage people in conversation. At other times I will strike up conversations. There is nothing I love more than walking up to a small group of college-age young people and asking them whether they believe in God or not, etc. In many instances, this may be the first time they have discussed their views in the presence of their friends.
Serving the Community
Engaging in evangelism at Falls Park can be a powerful way to witness and demonstrate Christ’s love. While not everyone will be glad you are there, many others will be appreciative. In addition, many Christians will be emboldened in their own faith by what you are doing. Regular evangelistic activities at Falls Park help establish a visible Christian presence in the community. Being present in the park and actively engaging with people makes it clear that the church is invested in the well-being of the community and committed to sharing the love of Christ.
The visibility of our church’s activities in the park has led to numerous conversations and connections with people who might not have otherwise come into contact with us. It’s a powerful way to build a positive reputation and to be seen as a loving, caring presence in the community.
