Pastor’s Recommended Apps

On a number of occasions, you may have heard me suggest that you “use your smartphone smartly.” The smartphone can be a useful tool for Christian living. Recently, I had the idea of sharing the apps I use for various reasons. It may be helpful. All of these apps are free, and most of them should be available on iOS and Android. Search for them in the app store.

Bible Apps

Literal Word – Every Christian needs access to a readable Bible. This is the app I use when I want to quickly look something up or read with someone when I do not have access to a hard copy of the Scriptures.

Holy Bible by YouVersion – I use this for my daily Bible reading because it allows me to select a plan, keeps me in the right place, and I can choose to have it read the text while I am reading to help me stay focused. I currently use Horner’s Bible Reading Plan, which is ten chapters daily. If I get distracted, I will never complete the reading, so I use the app to mark the verses of particular interest to me that I want to return to.

Bible Memorization

Bible.is – This app has a very specific purpose. If I want to familiarize myself with a passage, I can create a playlist which it can read aloud to me repeatedly. For example, if I am trying to commit a section to memory, I can create a playlist and have it read to me while I am driving.

Versify App – This is a helpful tool to aid in Bible memorization.

Sermons and Confessions

SermonAudio – I imagine this app needs little introduction. Founded by Steven Lee from our own church, this app gives access to an inexhaustible library of reliable sermons. The library of good audiobooks is also increasing.

ChurchOne – Produced by SermonAudio, you can specify your own church so that you are notified of webcasts when they go live, and can easily limit the search to the sermons only preached from your chosen church.

Reformed Companion – If you would like to have access to the Westminster Confession of Faith, catechisms, and other helpful creeds and confessions, this app puts them at your fingertips.
